Assessing Gender Bias in Paramedic-Provider Patient Handoffs

Background/Objective: Gender bias is prevalent in the medical workplace and can lead to burnout. Female providers report higher rates of microaggressions, but studies do not describe direct observation workplace. Research shows gender physician evaluations has evaluated how affects communication during patient care. This investigation addresses both limitations by observing whether impacts paramedic-provider communication. We hypothesize that EMS personnel will preferentially communicate with male Emergency Medicine hand-off reports. 
 Methods: In this study, a blinded observer collected data real-time while watching interactions between Department providers. The recorded attending or resident received initial attention majority paramedic asked if either had questions. Additional questions on survey regarding were documented keep nature study. Chi-square analysis was used determine association each four outcomes provider based attending-resident groupings (female-female, female-male, male-female, male-male).
 Results: Preliminary results study show paramedics give their first residents over attendings, regardless gender. Generally, did ask attendings There no statistically significant differences likelihood any pairings.
